Goal Setting with “GSOT”
Struggling with goal-setting for 2023?
I found this method really helps simplify the process.
Goals ➡ Strategies ➡ Objectives ➡ Tactics
▶ GOALS -> Why are we doing it?
✔ Exciting and inspirational
✔ Relevant to the entire organization
✔ Includes a specific goal and timeline
❌ Should not say how to get there
High-level goals are typically set by the CEO, President, or General Manager.
📝Example: "Grow sales to $1 billion by 2025"
▶ STRATEGY -> What's our approach?
✔ Clear, punchy, memorable.
✔ Organizes a range of projects or initiatives under one banner
✔ 3 or fewer (focus is a superpower)
❌ Not be a detailed action plan! This comes later.
Strategy pillars are usually set by the department leader.
📝Example: "Develop and sell new products"
▶ OBJECTIVES -> "What do we want to achieve?"
✔ Outcome-focused. Captures the result you want.
✔ Includes KPIs or OKRs
✔ 2-3 per strategy (again, force focus!)
❌ Still not a detailed action plan! "How" comes next.
Objectives are developed together between team and manager.
📝Example: "Build and execute a product plan that supports $1B in sales by 2025"
▶ TACTICS -> How will we achieve it?
✔ List specific projects and initiatives that deliver your objectives
✔ Specify start and finish dates
✔ With your manager, aggressively filter down to the best ideas
❌ Don't chase every good idea; focus on the key few.
Take the lead developing your tactics. Consult with your manager and teammates across the organization with similar objectives.
📝Example: "Set prioritization and resource plans to deliver our 2023 product pipeline"

Using the GSOT method, you'll translate lofty high-level goals in to individual action.
I've used it to achieve my goals as a product manager, marketing director, and product director.
I hope it helps you break records in the new year!
